Doctors: Birth of a baby with a congenital anomaly is not a “divine punishment”; folic acid deficiency and arbitrary drug use are important factors

Kabul Times News | Paktia

Reports have been published that inform about the birth of a baby with a congenital anomaly in Paktia Province. At the same time, some users on social networks have described the event as “divine punishment”; but doctors emphasize that such a claim has no scientific or medical basis.

According to experts, babies are innocent and congenital anomalies usually occur as a result of medical, genetic or environmental factors, not as punishment or torment.

Doctors say that one of the most important factors in the occurrence of some congenital anomalies is the lack of folic acid in the mother’s body before pregnancy and in the first weeks of pregnancy. Also, arbitrary use of drugs during pregnancy can increase the risk of some anomalies.

Health experts recommend that women who are planning to become pregnant start taking folic acid tablets at least three months before conception, after consulting a doctor, and continue taking them for at least the first three months of pregnancy. They also emphasize that no medication should be taken during pregnancy without a doctor’s prescription.

Doctors have urged citizens to pay attention to scientific and medical advice to learn the cause of these abnormalities, instead of spreading rumors and attributing such cases to false beliefs.
