24 hours after devastating floods in Nuristan; victims await emergency aid, UN expresses only sympathy

Kabul Times News:

More than 24 hours after the devastating floods in Parun district, the capital of Nuristan province, many victims are still waiting to receive first aid; while reports indicate extensive damage and the disappearance of a number of residents.

According to local information, the flood has destroyed large parts of Parun market and caused heavy damage to residential houses and people's property. However, residents of the area say that emergency aid has not yet reached many affected families and their basic needs have not been met.

Meanwhile, Bruno Lemarque, the UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and announced that Parun district was the hardest hit by the recent floods, with a number of people dead and others still missing.

He added that UN humanitarian agencies and relief partners are assessing the damage and planning to provide emergency assistance to the affected people.

Despite these statements, residents of the affected areas emphasize that the passage of more than a day and a half without access to urgent assistance has increased concerns about the situation of flood-affected families and that the relief process is expected to be carried out more quickly to prevent the humanitarian crisis in Nuristan from escalating.
