Following an attack by Ukraine on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that Tehran will not leave the incident unanswered.
According to reports, an explosion occurred on an Iranian commercial vessel on Saturday, killing one sailor and injuring another. Iran’s Foreign Ministry described the attack as a hostile and aggressive act and summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran in protest.
Araghchi also emphasized in talks with European and Russian officials that the attack on the Iranian vessel cannot go unanswered and called for a serious international response to the incident.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had carried out long-range attacks in the Caspian Sea and claimed that some vessels linked to the transportation of Iranian military cargo had been targeted. However, details regarding the exact targets and the cargo carried by the vessel remain disputed between the two sides.
The incident could further increase tensions between Tehran and Kyiv, particularly as Iran has previously faced strong criticism from Ukraine over alleged military cooperation with Russia and the reported use of Iranian-made drones in the war in Ukraine.
