A number of members of the Afghan Women’s Political Participation Network gathered in front of the Afghan Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday and held a protest rally to protest the recent arrests of women and girls by the Taliban in Herat city and a number of other provinces of Afghanistan.

The participants of the gathering strongly condemned the arbitrary arrests of women and girls, calling them a clear violation of human rights, human dignity and fundamental freedoms of Afghan citizens. While expressing solidarity with the women and people of Herat, they emphasized that restrictive and repressive policies against women will not only silence their voices, but will also strengthen the will of Afghan women to defend their rights and freedoms.

The protesters announced in a statement that Afghan women will not remain silent in the face of oppression, discrimination, repression, and deprivation of their fundamental rights, and will continue their civil and peaceful struggles to achieve justice, equality, and human dignity.

The participants of the rally also called on the United Nations, international human rights organizations, governments, and the international community not to remain indifferent to the current situation in Afghanistan and to take practical and effective measures to stop arbitrary arrests, repression of women, and widespread human rights violations.

At the end of the rally, the Afghan Women's Political Participation Network once again announced its support and solidarity with the women and people of Herat and called for an immediate end to arbitrary arrests, violence, and all forms of violations of women's rights in Afghanistan.

This protest is being held at a time when recent reports about the arrest of a number of women and girls in Herat have sparked widespread reactions among women's rights activists and human rights organizations.
