Ali Jan, a teenager injured in the Jibrael protests, dies after a week in Herat

Local sources in Herat say that Ali Jan, a 17-year-old teenager who was injured during the recent protests in the Jibrael area, died last evening after being hospitalized for several days.
According to the teenager’s relatives, he was shot in both knees during the protests and also suffered a serious head injury. Sources add that the severity of his bleeding and deterioration of his physical condition had caused acute health problems, including kidney damage.
Ali Jan was treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a government hospital in Herat for seven days. His family claims that the medical process for the teenager’s condition was flawed; however, hospital officials have not yet commented on the matter.
Meanwhile, the teenager's death has sparked widespread reactions among Herat residents and social media users. A number of citizens have referred to Alijan as one of the young protesters who demanded girls' access to education, work, and civil liberties.
Alijan's family says that during the treatment period, they faced many difficulties due to economic problems and were unable to use more advanced medical facilities. They also spoke of the lack of financial and human support during their child's treatment.
The teenager's body is scheduled to be transferred to the Imam Hassan Askari Mosque in the Jibraeel area today for a funeral and burial ceremony. His family and relatives have asked citizens to attend the Fatiha ceremony and express their sympathy, accompanying them in these difficult days.
Alijan's death comes as the situation of injured protesters and families of victims of recent events continues to be a hot topic of discussion among civil society activists and Afghan citizens.
