Afghan Women Protest at European Parliament; “T-Alban Does Not Represent the Afghan People

MADRID, Spain – A number of Afghan women, human rights activists and women’s rights advocates gathered in front of the European Parliament in Madrid today to protest against T-Alban’s invitation to Europe.

Carrying a resolution and chanting protest slogans, the participants emphasized that the Taliban do not represent the Afghan people and that any political engagement that would legitimize the group would ignore the rights and demands of millions of Afghan women and girls.

The protesters called on the European Parliament, European governments and international institutions to stand with Afghan women and hold perpetrators of widespread human rights violations accountable, rather than providing opportunities for T-Alban to appear in political forums.

They also chanted the slogan “T-Alban belongs in international courts, not in the European Parliament,” calling for increased international pressure on the group and emphasizing the continuation of civil struggles to defend women’s rights and fundamental freedoms in Afghanistan.

Participants in the gathering warned that any normalization of relations with T-Alban, without considering the human rights situation and women’s rights, could have negative consequences for the future of Afghanistan and global human rights values.
