Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris, has taken on a striking new appearance as part of a major contemporary art project.
The historic bridge is being temporarily transformed into an installation called “Pont Neuf Cave,” created by renowned street artist JR.
In the first phase of the project, the bridge was wrapped in fabric, which was then inflated to form a monumental sculptural structure. The interior space is now being developed to resemble a cave-like environment.
The installation is intended as a tribute to artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who famously wrapped the same bridge in fabric in 1985 in one of the most iconic public art projects of the 20th century.
According to the announced schedule, “Pont Neuf Cave” will be open to the public from June 6 to June 28. During this period, the bridge will function as a temporary tunnel-like artwork, with an exterior resembling rock formations and an interior designed to evoke a cave.
The project is seen as part of Paris’s broader cultural efforts to connect contemporary art with the city’s historic architecture, attracting significant media attention and tourist interest.
