Afghanistan back on Security Council agenda; humanitarian, security crisis, and women’s situation

The United Nations Security Council is set to hold a special meeting to review the situation in Afghanistan; a meeting in which the humanitarian crisis, security challenges, and increasing restrictions on the rights of women and girls will be the focus of the council members.

The meeting, scheduled for June 17, will begin with the presentation of a comprehensive report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The report will examine the latest political, human rights, economic, and humanitarian developments in Afghanistan.

After the presentation of the report, Security Council members will discuss the findings and concerns about the situation in Afghanistan. According to UN sources, the humanitarian crisis, restrictions imposed on women and girls, and security threats will be among the most important themes of the meeting.

The Security Council is also scheduled to decide on the extension of UNAMA’s mission in Afghanistan on June 18. Reports submitted to the Council indicate that security challenges, border tensions, and the activities of terrorist groups remain major concerns of the international community regarding Afghanistan.
