Protesters in Luxembourg Demand Support for Afghan Women’s Rights
A number of human rights activists, members of civil society organizations, women and citizens of Afghanistan issued a resolution at a protest rally in Luxembourg calling for the immediate lifting of restrictions imposed on Afghan women and girls.
Participants in the rally considered the deprivation of women from education, work, social and political participation and fundamental freedoms as a clear violation of human rights and expressed concern about the increase in pressure, arbitrary detentions and social restrictions against women.
In the resolution, the protesters called on the European Union to consider the rights of Afghan women as a non-negotiable principle in any interaction with the Taliban. They also called for the immediate release of detained women, independent investigations into recent events in Herat, Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif, and holding perpetrators of violence accountable.
Participants emphasized that no decision about the future of Afghanistan should be made without the presence and meaningful participation of women, and called on the international community to increase its practical support for Afghan women.
This gathering was held at the initiative of the Afghan Association of Luxembourg.
