The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Thursday called on the Taliban to clarify the legal basis for the detention of at least three journalists and respect the principles of fair trial.

In a statement, UNAMA expressed its concern over the increasing restrictions on the media and the situation of freedom of expression in Afghanistan, stressing that journalists should be able to continue their professional activities without fear of arrest, threats and pressure.

The organization also called on the Taliban to guarantee the fundamental rights of detainees, including access to a lawyer, contact with family and a transparent judicial process.

In recent months, numerous reports of arrests, threats and restrictions against journalists and media activists have been published in Afghanistan; an issue that has increased the concern of international organizations defending media freedom.

The Taliban have not yet officially responded to UNAMA's new request.
