Taliban Embassy in Berlin Threatens Clients; Concerns Over Afghan Refugees’ Safety Rise

A number of Afghan citizens residing in Germany claim that when they visited the Taliban-run Afghan Embassy in Berlin, they were confronted with threatening behavior, psychological pressure, and direct warnings from some employees of this diplomatic mission; an issue that has raised widespread concerns among the Afghan refugee community.

According to several clients, people who visited the embassy for passport renewal, document verification, power of attorney, and other consular services were subjected to sensitive questions and verbal threats after expressing critical views about the Taliban or engaging in civic and media activities.

One client, who did not want to be named, told Kabul Times News:

“They asked me about my activities on social media and warned that if I published anything against the Islamic Emirate, it would cause problems for my family in Afghanistan.”

Another person also claimed that some embassy employees have asked clients to refrain from participating in anti-Taliban rallies and protests in Germany.

These claims come at a time when thousands of Afghan citizens in Europe, especially civil society activists, journalists and women protesters, have sought refuge in European countries after the Taliban returned to power in 2021 and are concerned about the safety of their families inside Afghanistan.

Reaction from human rights organizations

Some human rights activists in Germany have called for an immediate investigation of these claims by the German government. They emphasize that diplomatic missions should not become tools of political or security pressure against asylum seekers.

An Afghan activist based in Berlin told Kabul Times News:

“If these reports are true, it is a clear violation of human rights and an abuse of diplomatic position. Clients should be able to receive consular services without fear of intimidation.”

Silence of the Taliban Embassy in Berlin

As of the time of publication of this report, the Afghan Embassy in Berlin, which operates under the management of diplomats affiliated with the Taliban, has not officially responded to these allegations. Kabul Times News’s efforts to obtain a response from embassy officials remained unsuccessful.

Call for an independent investigation

Meanwhile, a number of organizations defending the rights of migrants have called on the German government to monitor the behavior of employees of Taliban-affiliated missions and provide a safe place for Afghan clients to file complaints.

Political analysts believe that the increase in such reports could affect the legal and political status of Taliban missions in Europe, especially in a situation where the Taliban government is still not recognized by many countries in the world.
