Yaftal Payin Protests: Four Dead, Eight Injured, Sources Say
Badakhshan – Kabul Times News: Local sources in Badakhshan province say the number of victims of Taliban shooting at protesters in Yaftal Payin district has increased to four dead and eight injured, including a woman.
According to sources, the protests began after a woman allegedly requested a body search at a checkpoint in Sang-Aab district. Local sources also say that Taliban forces opened fire to disperse the protesters.
Eyewitnesses said that the bodies of the four victims and eight injured were transferred to Faizabad Hospital on Saturday evening and the bodies were returned to Yaftal Payin district for burial on Sunday.
In contrast, Ehsanullah Kamgar, spokesman for the Taliban police command in Badakhshan, confirmed the protests but gave a different account. According to him, Taliban forces were trying to search a man and a woman suspected of transporting drugs, and after the woman’s body search was published, local residents attacked the security checkpoint. He did not provide an explanation for the number of dead and injured.
The incident has also been accompanied by reactions. Salahuddin Salar, a Taliban commander, confirmed the killing of civilians and described it as “tragic.” Also, the Jamiat-e-Islami of Afghanistan, led by Salahuddin Rabbani, and the Sepahian Mihan Front have issued statements condemning the shooting of protesters.
