Local sources in Badakhshan province have reported the death of a young woman named Shakila in Warduj district; an incident that, according to the sources, occurred after she visited the Taliban court to resolve family problems.
According to the information received, Shakila, who was the mother of a four-month-old girl, had visited the Taliban court to find a solution to her family problems due to what local sources describe as “violence, mistreatment, and psychological pressure from her husband’s family.”
According to the same sources, Shakila was beaten by the Taliban court judge during the hearing of the case on charges of requesting a divorce. The sources also say that she denied the accusation and emphasized that she did not want a divorce, but only wanted to be able to live with her husband without pressure or violence.
Local sources claim that Shakila threw herself into the Warduj River after leaving the court and died.
As of the time of publication, Taliban officials have not officially commented on the incident, and Kabul Times News has not been able to independently verify the claims.
The incident comes as human rights activists have repeatedly expressed concern about the rise in domestic violence and limited access to legal and judicial protection for women in Afghanistan.
