Two sources close to Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the former president of Afghanistan, have told the BBC that he recently left the United Arab Emirates and is now “in a safe place.”
In a message on the occasion of Eid al-Adha this evening, Ashraf Ghani addressed the Afghan people after six months of silence: “I was forbidden from talking to you for the past six months and my voice was silenced.”
This is the first public message from the former president of Afghanistan in the last six months; a message that has increased speculation about his status and whereabouts.
It is not yet clear to which country or place Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has been transferred. He left Afghanistan after the fall of the republican government and the return of the Taliban to power in August 2021 and was living in the United Arab Emirates as a political refugee.
Mr. Ghani's possible departure from the UAE comes at a time when the political situation in Afghanistan remains uncertain and many of the country's former political figures are in exile.
Official sources from the United Arab Emirates and the office of Mohammad Ashraf Ghani have not yet commented on the report
