Kabul Times News | Report - 04-30-2026

Sources from the Taliban say that the name of "Police" in Afghanistan is to be officially changed to "Shardi". According to these sources, this measure will be taken within the framework of new administrative and structural reforms and the relevant law will come into force soon.

According to the published information, this name change is aimed at aligning security structures with historical and cultural concepts. The word "Sharda" is known in the history of the Islamic world as one of the first regular structures for ensuring urban security.

According to experts, "Sharda" was formed during the Umayyad Caliphate and its officers were responsible for providing security, combating crimes, enforcing laws, and monitoring public order; duties that are very similar to the performance of today's police. This institution had an important position in the government structure in later periods, especially during the Abbasid period.

Officials have not yet provided further details on the exact timing of the change and its full scope, but the decision is expected to elicit mixed reactions from citizens and experts.
