Human rights activists, journalists and Afghan women trapped in Iran: “International institutions have forgotten us”
A group of Afghan human rights activists, journalists and women who took refuge in Iran after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan issued a joint statement calling for immediate assistance and support from human rights institutions and international organizations.
These individuals, who fled to Iran after the fall of Kabul in August 2021, are now trapped in war-torn and insecure conditions inside Iran and say there is no safe way out for them.
In their statement, they strongly criticized the neglect and discriminatory behavior of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Tehran, calling it “unacceptable.” The Afghan activists emphasize that despite registering their asylum applications, UNHCR has so far taken no effective action to support, relocate or transfer them to a third country.
The statement reads in part:
“The silence of international institutions towards our situation is questionable and regrettable. We have not only escaped the danger of the Taliban, but now we are also in danger in the midst of the war and insecurity of Iran.”
Afghan women activists and journalists, many of whom are on the Taliban’s blacklist for their human rights and media activities, have warned that if the international community continues to fail to act, the lives of hundreds of human rights defenders and Afghan women will be in direct danger.
