UN Secretary-General Appoints Rabab Fatima as New Head of UNAMA in Afghanistan

Kabul Times News – The UN Secretary-General has appointed senior Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima as his Special Representative for Afghanistan and the new Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

With more than three decades of experience in diplomacy, policymaking and international cooperation, Rabab Fatima is a recognized figure in the field of global diplomacy. She served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations from 2019 to 2022, during which time she also chaired the Executive Board of UN Women and the UN Peacebuilding Commission.

According to the UN announcement, Rabab Fatima succeeds Roza Otunbayeva and will henceforth be responsible for leading the UNAMA mission in Afghanistan.

The appointment of the new head of UNAMA comes at a time when Afghanistan continues to face widespread political, economic and humanitarian challenges, and the role of this institution in coordinating international assistance and interacting with relevant parties is of particular importance.
