Head of Taliban Ulema Council: Women’s Education is Completely Haram

Emphasis on Absolute Ban on Education for Girls and Women; Even Religious Schools Are Not Exempted from This Restriction

In a recent statement, the head of the Taliban Ulema Council in Kabul has called any education for women and girls “absolutely forbidden” and emphasized that even education in religious schools is not permissible for them.

According to a released audio tape, this Taliban official said that women should not attend any educational center. He also described modern sciences, including science and technology, as “fuzzless science” and emphasized the complete ban on women’s education.

These statements come at a time when the Taliban have imposed extensive restrictions on the education of women and girls since returning to power in August 2021. Currently, girls are denied access to education beyond the sixth grade, and the doors of universities are also closed to women.

The Taliban’s education policies towards women have faced widespread domestic and international criticism over the past three years. Human rights organizations, educational institutions, and many countries around the world have repeatedly called for the lifting of restrictions and the reopening of educational centers for girls and women.

Experts believe that the continuation of these restrictions could have far-reaching consequences for the social, economic, and human development of Afghanistan, further limiting the educational opportunities of millions of girls and women.
