Akhundzada's Eid Message; Emphasizing the "Islamic System" Amid Continued Restrictions on Women and Education
In his Eid message on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhundzada once again emphasized the rule of the "Islamic System" and claimed that the people of Afghanistan live in a safe and peaceful atmosphere under the shadow of this system.
Akhundzada began his speech with verses and hadiths related to sacrifice; but throughout his message, he made no mention of the continued closure of schools and universities to girls, the extensive restrictions on women, and the domestic and international criticism of Taliban policies.
In part of this message, the Taliban leader called on the people to make more sacrifices and dedication for the "survival of the Islamic system" and also called on Taliban officials not to close their doors to the people, to treat citizens appropriately, and to avoid oppression and abuse.
He also praised the performance of Taliban-affiliated institutions, including Sharia courts and the Ministry of Encouraging Righteousness and Preventing Evil, and considered them part of the implementation of Islamic Sharia.
This comes despite human rights groups and international organizations repeatedly accusing the Taliban of widespread violations of citizens’ rights, especially women’s rights and civil liberties. Despite these criticisms, the Taliban have continued to impose educational and social restrictions on women and girls.
