More than 20 killed, injured in deadly floods around Kabul; Istalif among affected areas.

Following heavy rainfall and flash floods on the night of May 20, 2026, Istalif district of Kabul province has witnessed extensive financial and human losses. Local sources say that the floods began after a few hours of heavy rain and destroyed parts of villages, agricultural lands, gardens and public roads.

According to initial reports, the strong flow of water has entered residential houses and disrupted the movement of residents. Images published on social media show that the flood has also washed away parts of secondary roads and walls of houses.

Local sources in Istalif said that rescue teams and local residents were busy rescuing families trapped in the affected areas until this morning. Some families have also been forced to leave their homes.

In terms of human casualties, initial reports indicate that the recent floods in Kabul and surrounding districts, including Surobi and Istalif, have left more than 20 dead and injured. Some local media outlets have also reported that several members of a family have died in flood-related incidents. Officials have not yet released a final and accurate death toll.

The Afghan Meteorological Department has warned that the possibility of continued rainfall and flooding in Kabul province and neighboring areas remains. Local officials have urged citizens to avoid traveling along rivers and vulnerable areas.

Residents of Istalif have called on the government and relief agencies to provide immediate humanitarian assistance, temporary shelter and food to the affected families.
