Richard Bennett: The situation of women in Afghanistan is “gender apartheid” and a crime against humanity
Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, described the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan as “deeply worrying” in his latest statement, stressing that their systematic repression is a “crime against humanity.”
Mr. Bennett said that the widespread violation of women’s rights by the Taliban is so widespread and severe that it can be considered an attack on civilians. He added:
“This situation can rightly be described as gender apartheid. Afghan women themselves have said that this term reflects the harsh reality of their lives very well.”
The UN Special Rapporteur also emphasized that ending the cycle of violence in Afghanistan requires comprehensive efforts and the use of all international instruments. According to him, perpetrators of human rights violations must be held accountable in all circumstances and no one should be exempted from punishment.
Richard Bennett further suggested that "gender apartheid" be included as an example of a crime against humanity in international documents and treaties to provide a legal basis for its prevention and prosecution.
