Afghan Women’s Political Participation Network Concerned About Media Suppression on World Press Freedom Day

Kabul – May 3, 2026 (Kabul Times News):
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Afghan Women’s Political Participation Network issued a statement expressing its deep concern about the situation of freedom of expression, media suppression, and widespread human rights violations in the country.

The statement stated that journalists, civil society activists, and media workers in Afghanistan face systematic censorship, threats, arrests, and increasing pressure. It also emphasized that independent media are under severe restrictions and citizens’ free access to information has been seriously reduced.

The organization described the situation of women and girls in particular as “worrying,” adding that they have been deprived of their fundamental rights in the areas of education, work, and social and political participation.

The Afghan Women’s Political Participation Network, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression as one of the fundamental pillars of a democratic society, warned that the continuation of this situation could hinder the realization of justice and development in the country.

The network further called on the international community, human rights organizations, and free media to take action to restore freedom of expression and the fundamental rights of the Afghan people—especially women—by providing practical support to journalists at risk, documenting human rights violations, and taking urgent measures.

The statement concluded:
“We stand with all those who strive for truth, justice, and freedom, and we believe that the voice of freedom will not be silenced.”
