Aisha Wahab, a California lawmaker, won a special election for the 14th Congressional District in the US, becoming the first woman of Afghan descent to enter the House of Representatives.

Wahab defeated Melissa Hernandez with more than 53 percent of the vote and will replace Eric Swale, who resigned after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced.

With this victory, the number of Democratic seats in the US House of Representatives increases to 213 and the number of Republican seats to 218.

Aisha Wahab’s victory comes at a time when Afghan women and girls under Taliban rule face extensive restrictions on education, work and participation in society. The Taliban have justified these restrictions in some cases by citing their understanding of Islamic values ​​and the welfare of women.
