The European Parliament has announced the official registration of a petition calling for the recognition of “gender apartheid” in Afghanistan and the designation of the Taliban as a terrorist organization, following several days of sit-ins in Brussels and Strasbourg and the collection of thousands of signatures.
According to an official letter dated April 24, 2026, issued on behalf of the President of the European Parliament, the petition has been referred to the Parliament’s Committee on Petitions and is currently under review.
The petition is said to aim at drawing the attention of European institutions to the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan, as well as increasing political and legal pressure on the Taliban.
Civil society activists and participants in the initiative have described the formal registration of the petition as an important step in international advocacy, calling for more concrete global action in response to Taliban policies.
